Raman scattering and materials under extreme conditions of temperature and irradiation

Raman scattering is widely used for investigating the vibrational and electronic states of materials, which yield to valuable information about their chemical composition, their crystallinity state, or even their mechanical strain state. After a brief presentation of Raman basics and the experimental techniques, a review will be given of recent results obtained on different materials under extreme conditions of temperature and irradiation, illustrating the efficiency of Raman approach. First, the relaxation phenomena in amorphous materials will be presented. Then, one will consider a series of studies on strongly correlated 5f electron systems actinide dioxides: electronic excitations, electron-phonon coupling, multi-phonon process and crystal field transitions. To finish, few perspectives on the measurement of spectroscopic data for actinide molecules at cryogenic temperatures will be exposed. The motivation for this type of investigation is that fundamental properties of 5f elements can be studied in the absence of external perturbations (gas phase) or under minimally perturbing conditions (cryogenic matrices).
